The 4 Luxe Textiles You Need to Consider Incorporating into Your Home

Not every update in your home needs to be a full renovation. Sometimes updating the soft furnishings inyour home can have a huge impact. Let’s look at four of my foundational textiles that I love to include in every design: Velvet, Linen, Leather, and Wool.

#1: Touchable, Elegant & Vibrant Velvet Pieces

Velvet is a luxurious way to add elegance to any space. I use velvet on accent chairs or accent pillows on a sofa to add texture. I love using velvet on pieces I will touch and feel every day. This dense woven fabric, cut short creating the distinctive soft feel adds more than just a visual break; it adds the softness needed for a comfortable space. If you are worried about the longevity of velvet and the possibility (or likelihood with children) of getting soiled quickly, there are velvets that have been created for commercial environments that are performance grade fabrics built to withstand abuse. Another great option is to try using velvet in your window treatments; they make a big statement while being handled a

#2: Fresh, Crisp & Layered Linen Accents

Linen fabric is my “go to” when aiming for a fresh relaxed look. The right linen fabric can bring an elegant feel to a home and still feel livable. Linen fabric that has been treated is a great option for soft seating for families with kids and pets. It is a durable fabric that can handle the day to day needs in your home. We have four (expecting number 5) kids and our linen sofa has held up to their daily abuse and still looks great two years later.

#3: Sophisticated, Durable & Luxe Leather Pieces

Genuine leather is my favorite way to add a touch of warmth and something that will continue to build character over time. Leather chairs and leather sofas age so gracefully when cared for properly. You can make a statement by using leather as the staple piece of furniture or add leather as an accent in pillows or a large ottoman to pull the room together. When I design a luxurious space, my heart sings when I have the opportunity to include vintage leather pieces to complete a well-rounded design. When considering leather, I encourage my clients to ask themselves if imperfections are allowable. If the answer is no, you may want to consider using another textile. Leather holds on to scratches and scuffs throughout its life, and personally that is why I love it!

#4: Comfortable, Soft & Warm Wool Accents

When you consider using wool, look at the benefits of using this natural fiber: it has natural stain-resistance, resilient fibers that bounce back quickly and maintain longevity, and the fiber is a natural material that is replenishable. Wool rugs, blankets, and pillows can be an investment in pieces that will look stunning for a long time to come.

Adding any of the four staple textiles can elevate nearly any home style and aesthetic. The art of mixing fabrics, textures, colors, and style is the secret to creating a curated home. Here I have assembled a collection using all four textiles to create a luxurious living room full of character. Click here to shop the look!
